Medicare

Medicare is a health insurance program for beneficiaries 65 or older. You’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65. Certain individuals; however, may be eligible to obtain Medicare coverage earlier due to a qualified disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Medicare has (4) Parts and a Supplement:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) - Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and home health care. Most people don't pay a premium for Part A because they or a spouse already paid for it through their payroll taxes while working.

  • Part B (Medical Insurance) - Helps cover services from doctors and other health care providers and outpatient care. There is a monthly premium associated with this Part.

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) – Medicare Advantage is a Medicare-approved plan from a private company that offers an alternative to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) for your health and drug coverage. These “bundled” plans include Part A, Part B, and usually Part D. There may be a monthly premium associated with these options.

  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) - Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines). You join a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare, or you may be able to obtain this coverage by joining a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage. Plans that offer Medicare drug coverage are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare. There may be a monthly premium associated with these options.

  • Medicare Supplement (aka Medigap) – This is supplemental insurance you can purchase from a private insurance company that will help pay your share of costs in Original Medicare. Policies are standardized, and in most states these plans are named by letters, for example: Plan G or Plan K. The benefits in each lettered plan are the same, no matter which insurance company sells it. There is a monthly premium associated with these options.

Short-Term Medical Plans

Short-Term Medical plans can help protect you if you find yourself without health insurance.  These plans are designed to provide you with coverage for unexpected illnesses, injuries and accidents.  And the best part is that if you are eligible you can receive coverage as quickly as the day after applying.  You don’t have to wait weeks for the coverage you need today!

It’s an ideal choice if you are:

  • A Student or recent graduate

  • A Nursing or Allied Health Student

  • No longer eligible under a parents plan

  • Between jobs

  • Waiting for employer benefits to begin

  • Without coverage due to job or life changes

Plan Features:

Short-Term Medical plans include coverage for doctor office visits (for illness and injury), inpatient and outpatient procedures, emergency services and more.

  • Flexible Coverage Periods – Coverage can be purchased for periods between 30 and 90 days in length

  • Various Coverage Options – Plans offer a wide range of deductible and co-insurance levels to ensure you get the coverage you need at a price you can afford.

  • Network Savings – With these short-term plans, you have access to a large network of doctors, whether you are at home or traveling.  It’s likely the physicians you currently use are already among the network providers.  Keep in mind that you’ll receive the most savings when visiting network providers, but you’re still covered for most services if you choose to visit a non-network provider.
